One area I particularly like is the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic coast. I returned there for a short stay in July. First on the Schlei, then in Holstein Switzerland, and then on toward Hohwacht Bay.
In Holstein Switzerland, we headed straight into the beautiful lake landscape around Plön, Eutin, and Malente. More specifically, to the Stockseehof estate. A series of show gardens have been laid out along the edge of the extensive estate grounds. What's special about them is that they're all small gardens, providing perfect inspiration for outdoor spaces in cities or new housing developments, which are often limited in size.

Each of the approximately 25 "Small Gardens" is worth seeing in its own right, precisely because of their diversity. The garden designers who have implemented their designs here showcase gardens ranging from modern, straightforward to Asian-inspired to wildly romantic insect paradises. There are also many ideas for planting your own garden, including a wide variety of plants that survive with very little water and are ideal for providing blooms and colorful displays even in dry locations. Something that is becoming increasingly important in the course of climate adaptation.

Among all the gardens are three newly created areas that will be honored as part of a garden competition. This year's theme is "Small Urban Oases." Visitors can also vote.
Anyone who would like to visit the Small Gardens at Gut Stockseehof this year can do so until September 15. Otherwise, from June 2026. Admission costs 2 euros.
By the way, on the estate grounds you also have the opportunity to pick your own berries and enjoy a rustic breakfast or cakes on a meadow under large trees or in the barn.
